Improving places in the LTN

Street Design Competition:

The Your Streets, Your Way competition looked to harness the creativity of residents by asking them to transform their local environment. The competition sought a community-led vision to improve the borough for both people and the planet. In Railton, two locations were selected that community members were asked to submit design proposals for:

  • Somerleyton Passage
  • St Matthew’s Road (withdrawn due to low submissions)

Somerleyton Passage:

Somerleyton Passage was one of the locations for the Lambeth’s Street Design competition, Your Streets Your Way, which was ran in 2021.

The winning design for Somerleyton has been developed by InUse, ReUse in collaboration with the winner, local people and local collective ’81 Acts of Resistance’. The design comprises of wooden seating, a book library, a stage and planters to bring create a space where the community can spend time, hold events and talk about big ideas.

Bespoke Street Furniture:

Atlantic Road/ Railton Road have huge historical importance to the local area. We want to improve the street scene around Railton Road to create lively spaces that reflect rich local heritage and culture.

We are working with local makers InUse, ReUse who have collaborated with the community to design bespoke street furniture to feature in the LTN upgrades. Participants undertook a four-week co-design course. The course involved a site visit, an introduction to design and sketching, an exploration of the history and heritage of the area and many design ideas.

The final designs for a seating area and cycle storage have been created by the participants and have been manufactured by InUse, ReUse. The street furniture will be installed by the late Autumn.
